Doncaster Residents Invited to Help Protect 18 Historic Buildings and Landmarks

Doncaster residents are being asked to share their views on which local buildings and sites should be recognised for their heritage value, as part of a new public consultation.

The feedback received here will help determine which of 18 shortlisted properties will be the next to join the Doncaster Local Heritage List. For context, this is a register of assets – including monuments, churches, bridges, archaeological sites and other such structures – that are deemed to be significant to the city and its history.

To make it onto the list, buildings and landscapes must be valued by the local community and serve as distinctive parts of Doncaster’s past. They must also be sites that are not already classified as either national listed buildings, scheduled monuments or registered parks and gardens.

This is because one of the purposes of the list is to offer greater protections and status to assets that are not already covered by these statutory designations. Once included on the register, their conservation will be prioritised more strongly, and their heritage value will have to be taken into account whenever planning decisions or development proposals are being considered in the nearby area.

There are currently 47 Doncaster proprieties on the list and 18 more are now being considered. These proposed additions are as follows:

  • Conisbrough Lodge Farm

  • Blaxton Wesleyan Chapel

  • Churchyard and site of St John's Church, Fenwick

  • Conisbrough Urban District boundary marker, Hill Top

  • St. Peter's Church, Askern

  • St Wilfrith's Church, Moorends

  • Sykehouse Primitive Methodist Chapel

  • The Winning Post Public House, Balby

  • Hampole Priory Buried Remains

  • Askern Lodge, Doncaster Road, Owston

  • Conisbrough Parks Water Tunnel and Air Shafts

  • Doncaster & Selby Turnpike Milestone, Owston

  • Finningley Signal Box

  • Hilltop Farm, Firsby Lane

  • Old Hall Farm, Clayton

  • Roman Ermine Street, Red House Farm

  • Roman Ermine Street, Woodlands

  • Tithe Barn, Highfields

The nominees have all been through an expert panel, who judged that their applications had merit. Before a final decision about their inclusion on the Doncaster Local Heritage List can be made, however, the public are being consulted for their thoughts.

Speaking about this, Councillor Gemma Cobby, Cabinet Member for Regulation and Enforcement, Planning and Safer Communities at City of Doncaster Council, said:

“Doncaster has a rich and distinctive history that we know our residents are rightly proud of.

“The Doncaster Local Heritage List helps us to preserve this unique past and ensure that the places and stories that define it are cherished. By sparing just a couple of minutes to take part in our new consultation, you will have an opportunity to influence which buildings and assets are included on the list going forward, so that they can be better protected for future generations. Please, let us know your thoughts and help us celebrate our city’s heritage.”

Residents can share their support for, or thoughts on, the 18 properties currently under consideration for the Heritage List by emailing conservation@doncaster.gov.uk or via post before the end of Monday 7 December. Comments must be focused on the heritage of the sites in question.
